About this speaker

Gabi is a seasoned educator and researcher with over 15 years of experience teaching higher education. Currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of New South Wales Business School in Sydney, Australia, Gabi specialises in the pedagogy of kindness and relational teaching, advocating for respectful, empathetic, and trust-centered learning environments.

She received her BA(Hons) and MA degrees from the University of Cape Town and her PhD in Higher Education Studies from Rhodes University. Before joining UNSW, she worked at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, teaching business and academic communication across the Faculties of Engineering and the Built Environment, Commerce and the Graduate School of Business.

Driven by a passion for student wellbeing and professional growth, Gabi's research and practice focusses on critical kindness in education. Her work not only addresses the interpersonal aspects of teaching but also the systemic challenges of modern academia.

Through her blog, The Kind Academic, Gabi reflects on her journey in higher education, offering insights on kindness, self-care, and the complexities of navigating a neoliberal university system.
